View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.
Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Chandler Mountain sits about six miles southeast of Sweet Home, in Linn County, at 2,498 feet.1,2 The register says the Linn FPA administered it, and Forest Lookouts names the operator as the Linn County Fire Patrol.1,3
The register and firelookout.com both say a 10-by-10-foot cabin went up in 1915, about a mile and a half east of the site.1,2 Both also describe a two-story L-4 cab built on the mountain in 1952.1,2
Forest Lookouts tells the 1952 story differently. It says a 10-foot tower went up that year about a mile and a half west, on a point called Chimney Rock, and that duties were to move there from Chandler Mountain.3 The same page lists a cupola-style lookout house built in 1939.3
In July 1932 a Roseburg News-Review item, quoted by Forest Lookouts, reported that Fred Bateman had left for the Chandler lookout, where he would be stationed for the summer.3 In 1964 an Albany Democrat-Herald notice said the mountain would be in use that year only in emergencies.3
The register says the two-story cab was removed in 1970, and firelookout.com says it was destroyed that year.1,2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Oregon list shows the site as gone, with a two-story cab.4
The sources we read do not describe what, if anything, stands on the summit today, or whether visitors can reach it.
