View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Chinidere Mountain is a summit in Hood River County, Oregon, within the Mount Hood National Forest.1,2 A fire lookout was erected there in 1929, and it was gone by the 1940s.1,2
The register describes the first setup as a firefinder platform with a tent and phone.1 A July 1930 photo note on the Forest Lookouts page calls the site undeveloped, which sits uneasily with the 1929 date.3 An L-4 cab was added in 1934.2
In 1934 Ed Mohr, a lookout, came across an unextinguished campfire on patrol near Wahtum Lake, and the youths responsible were traced back to Eagle Creek camp.3 Six Portland boys were fined at Hood River for leaving the fire unextinguished on national forest land.3 In June 1935 the Bonneville Dam Chronicle reported that Harold Gustafson, a forestry student, would be the lookout as soon as pack horses could bring his supplies in, since the snow was still too deep for trucks.3 The Forest Lookouts page also notes that the site was activated from July 1 to September 14, 1943, under the Portland Filter Center.3
The register says the lookout had disappeared by the 1940s, and firelookout.com gives the same decade.1,2 The Forest Lookouts page only marks it as removed.3
Today the summit has no lookout left.4 Oregon Hikers reports that the only traces left are scraps of broken glass and pieces of cable.4 Hikers have put up several windbreaks from the shale on the east slope, and a USGS benchmark sits at the summit.4
The guide describes a hike from the Wahtum Lake Trailhead: drive forest roads to the trailhead, then walk about 1.5 miles to the top, where a 360-degree view opens up.4
