View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Chinquapin Point sits in the Siuslaw National Forest in Lincoln County, about 15 miles southeast of Toledo.1,2 The register describes a 20-foot pole L-4 tower on the point, at 1,104 feet (336 m) of elevation.1

The sources disagree about when the tower went up. A 1934 note cited on the Forest Lookouts page says the tower was built that year.3 The Osbornes Project also dates it to 1934.4 The register and firelookout.com both put the 20-foot tower in 1936.1,2 Panorama photos were taken there on March 24, 1934 and again on September 16, 1936.3,4

In August 1936 the Forest Lookouts page recounts that Nell Springer, wife of emergency guard C.D. Springer, was at the lookout while her husband was away on a fire.3 She spotted a new fire in a high-hazard area and pinpointed its location well enough that the crew got there as quickly as possible.3 The note's author suggested she receive the title of honorary lookout.3

The register says the tower was removed in 1950, and firelookout.com says it was destroyed that year.1,2 The Osbornes Project describes the lookout as abandoned by 1950.4
