View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.5 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Cleopatra Mountain is in Curry County, Oregon, on the Siskiyou National Forest, about 18 miles east-southeast of Brookings, at an elevation of 3,424 feet.1,2 A 40-foot treated timber L-4 tower went up there around 1939, according to the register and Firelookout.com.1,2 The Oregon lookouts page gives 1941 instead.3 A 1994 inventory of Siskiyou lookouts has a table that is hard to read, but its row for the mountain appears to show 1941 and a removal in 1962.4

The Oregon lookouts page also lists panorama photographs taken on September 5, 1936, before either construction date. It does not say what stood on the summit then.3

The same page says the station was staffed for 84 days in 1941 and reported by radio to the Redwood station.3 It also quotes a May 1940 plan for guard placement on the Siskiyou National Forest, which said lightning had been the sole cause of fires in earlier years and that the suggested dates were made on that basis.3

The Oregon lookouts page says the lookout was destroyed on October 12, 1962, in the Columbus Day storm.3 The register says it was removed in 1962, and Firelookout.com says destroyed.1,2 The register added the site on December 9, 2010.1

No source we read describes what remains at the site today, such as footings or a foundation, and none says whether the site is open to the public. A 2025 conservation article about the mountain describes the ways up to its top, including part of the historic McGrew Trail, and wooden stakes marking proposed nickel test sites there. It does not mention the lookout.5
