View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.4 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Coleman Point rises to 6,892 feet in the Fremont National Forest in Lake County, Oregon, about 17 miles east-northeast of Bly.1,2 Before a proper cab, the summit held a crow's nest platform in the 1930s.1 In 1934 a 10-by-10 L-5 lookout cabin went up there, and panorama photographs of the view were taken in August 1936.3

By 1948 the building had stood idle for some years. That year it went to Fitzwater Point, another former lookout site, and was put back together there the following year.3,4

The sources do not agree on the move. The Coleman Point register and the Oregon Lookouts page both give 1948 for the move, while the Fitzwater Point register dates the cab's arrival there to 1949.1,3,4 The Coleman Point register says the cab remained at Fitzwater Point until 1967, and the Fitzwater Point register says it was gone by then.1,4

The register lists Coleman Point among its former fire lookout sites.1 No source describes what, if anything, remains on the ridge today, and none records whether the site is open to visitors.
