View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.
Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Collins Mountain rises to 3,669 feet in the Umpqua National Forest in Douglas County, Oregon, about 24 miles east of Canyonville.1,2
The site was used for fire watch well before a cab stood on the summit.3 The Oregon Lookouts page says the site was first used in 1914 as an emergency lookout equipped with a compass, and that a lookout was posted in a 50-foot tree around 1925.3 The register and firelookout.com instead date a tree platform to 1931 and say it survived into the 1980s.1,2
A 1932 administrative site record, quoted on the Oregon Lookouts page, described a planned 14-by-14 glass-ribbed house for the lookout. It also said the public could reach the tract only by horse or on foot, six miles from the closest road.3 An L-4 lookout house went up in 1933.1,2,3
A September 1941 newspaper item, also quoted there, said Chester Morgan had staffed the Collins Butte lookout for the season just ended.3
The sources disagree on what came next. The Oregon Lookouts page dates a new tower and cab to about 1954. The register and firelookout.com date a wooden tower to 1970.1,2,3 The register and firelookout.com both say the lookout was used for emergencies in the 1970s.1,2
The register says the lookout is now gone.1 No source describes what, if anything, remains on the summit today, and none records whether the site is open to visitors.
