View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Coos Mountain sits in Coos County, near the North Fork of the Coquille River.1,2 The Coos FPA listed it as one of its lookout stations in December 1925.2

The sources disagree about the first tower. The Former Fire Lookout Sites register says a live-in tower went up in 1935.1,3 The Forest Lookouts site tells a longer story. In 1934 a 14 by 14 lookout house was packed to the mountain, and Mr. MacDonald, reached by phone, judged that a 40 to 50 foot treated timber tower could be hauled up as well.2 By April 1936 the same site reports a new tower and lookout house.2

Seasonal lookouts came and went. Maurice Tedro was posted there in 1928.2 Homer Millard spent the summer of 1935 at the station.2 In 1936 Robert King, an Oregon State College forestry student, was placed on the mountain.2 Ed Kondraski came back in 1938 to the post he had held the summer before.2 Marvel Christensen worked there in 1953, and Dana Wells was set to maintain the lookout for the summer of 1958.2

The ending is also unclear. The register says the 1935 tower was replaced in 1946 with a 10-foot treated timber tower carrying an L-4 house, and that it was removed in 1959.1 Firelookout.com gives the same 1946 replacement and 1959 end, but says the tower was destroyed.3 The Forest Lookouts site says an L-4 house went onto a 10-foot treated timber tower in 1957, and that the lookout was abandoned in 1962.2 We could not confirm which dates are right, or whether the 1957 house was the same as the 1946 tower.

No source we read describes what, if anything, remains on Coos Mountain today. We also found nothing about whether the site is open to visitors.
