View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.7 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Cougar Mountain, in the Siuslaw National Forest in Lincoln County, got its first cab in the early 1930s.1,2 A September 1931 letter says the Forest Service planned a fireman's cabin there and wanted the material up the mountain before the heavy fall rains.3 In 1954 a 41-foot treated timber L-4 tower went up, and Rex's page gives its estimated cost as $4,252.1,3

Rex's page says a garage went up in 1938, and it lists the post as activated on March 18, 1942, under the Portland Filter Center.3 A February 1943 Oregonian story says a man walked to the lookout after a shooting and reported it to Lookout Irvin Hussey.3 Rex's page marks 1970 as the last year the lookout was staffed.3

Rex's page says the tower came down after the 1970 fire season.3 The register says it has since been removed, and firelookout.com's header leaves the tower's end date open with only a question mark.1,2

None of the sources we read describes what, if anything, remains on the mountain today. The Former Fire Lookout Sites Register still lists the site.1
