View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Coyote Point is a former lookout site in the Umpqua National Forest, in Douglas County, Oregon, at about 3,093 feet (943 meters).1 The register and firelookout.com both date the tower to 1935.1,2 Rex's Fire Lookout Page describes it as a 14-by-14 L-4 lookout house on a 30-foot round timber tower.3
A Roseburg News-Review item dated April 17, 1936, quoted on Rex's page, says a new lookout house went up on Coyote point, in the southeastern part of the district.3 That item gives no construction year, so it does not settle the 1935 date.3
A second News-Review item, dated September 10, 1937, says Joe Chamberlain was then responsible for the lookout station at Point Coyote.3
The register says the tower was removed in 1960 and destroyed that year.1 Firelookout.com says it was abandoned in the 1950s, so the two sources give different dates for the end of its use.2 Firelookout.com and the Forest Fire Lookout Association's Oregon list both mark the tower as gone.2,4
The register lists the U.S. Forest Service as the administrator of the site.1 None of the four sources describes what, if anything, is left at the site now.1,3,2,4 We do not know whether any part of the lookout is still on the ground, and we found nothing on whether the public can reach the spot.1,3,2,4 Anyone planning a visit should check with the Umpqua National Forest before setting out.
