View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Crane Mountain lookout stood on Fremont National Forest land in Lake County.1 The register places it at the end of a spur one mile north of the summit.1 The site is about 10 miles southeast of Lakeview.2

The register calls the 1952 tower a 10-foot treated timber L-4 tower.1 A Forest Lookouts history says the new lookout house was an Aladdin hip-roof model, and that the tower replaced the Willow Point lookout.3 A 1959 inspection called the tower 10 feet high, but a 1963 memo refers to a "20' wood tower," so the sources disagree on its height.3

Newspaper notices quoted in that history name the people who staffed it.3 Gerald W. Lilje was stationed there in 1959, and Roy E. Jones was manning it in 1960.3 The history also says Richard and Dorothy Davie staffed it for part of the 1960 season, and a July 1961 notice has Mr. and Mrs. Ross Bailey manning it.3

The cabin was rebuilt in 1963.3 By 1969 the lookout was used only for emergency fire detection.3 That year a memo weighed removing the garage and toilet, saying those spots had seen many vandalism problems.3

The register says the tower was removed in 1972.1 The firelookout.com entry says it was destroyed that year.2 The Forest Lookouts history gives the same year for its removal.3

A photo on peakbagging.com from July 2007 is captioned as showing all that remains of the 1952 lookout.4 We found no source that describes those remains in detail or says whether the site is open to visitors today.
