View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.
Downloads about 3.4 MB of terrain data the first time.
Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Crockett Knob is in the Malheur National Forest in Grant County, Oregon, about 24 miles north-northeast of John Day.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists its elevation as 4,190 feet, or 1,277 meters, and names the U.S. Forest Service as the administering agency.2
A 1934 L-4 cab stood on the knob, according to the Forest Fire Lookout Association.2 Firelookout.com gives the same year.1
In August 1937 the Whitman Forest office asked to build a standard one-car garage and storeroom at the lookout. The Oregon Lookouts page records that the plan was approved for this site on August 6.3
A July 1953 item from the Nyssa Gate City Journal mentions a visit to Roger Stephen, who was on lookout duty at Crockett Knob near Bates.3
The Forest Fire Lookout Association says the cab was removed in 1971.2 Firelookout.com says it was destroyed that year, so the two sources agree on the date but not on how the cab left the site.1 The Oregon Lookouts page lists the lookout only as removed, with no date.3
We found no source that describes what remains at the site today, or whether the public can reach it. Check with the Malheur National Forest before planning a visit.
