View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.3 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Forest Service built an L-5 cab on Eagle Rock in the Willamette National Forest.1,2 An August 1933 item in The Oregon Statesman said the first little cabin would be built on the point, which is familiar to people who go to Breitenbush and can be plainly seen from the road.3

The register and firelookout.com both date the cab to 1934.1,2 Rex's page also records panorama photographs taken on October 2, 1933, so the build year is uncertain.3

The cab was gone by 1953, according to the register and firelookout.com.1,2

None of these pages describes what, if anything, remains of the lookout today.1,2,3 The register includes a 2016 photograph of the site, credited to Howard Verschoor, but its caption gives no detail.1 The sources do not say whether the site is open to the public, so check with the Willamette National Forest before going.
