View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Emigrant Butte rises in the Ochoco National Forest about 24 miles northwest of Burns, at 5,390 feet.1,2 The U.S. Forest Service administers the site.1

A house with a cupola went up on the butte in 1921, according to the register and firelookout.com.1,2 A November 1921 item from the Central Oregonian, quoted on Rex's page, says Ranger E.W. Donnelly built a lookout house there.3 A September 1922 item in the same paper describes a new box-type house, 12 by 12 feet, with a 7-by-7 cupola that held the fire finder.3 It does not say whether that house replaced the 1921 one.3

Staffing is recorded for only a few seasons.3 Thomas Ewing of Brothers ran the station in the summer of 1922.3 In 1929, Al Frey was the lookout until he took a winter job.3 Lester Williams covered the rest of the season, and Jack Choate came over from Dry Mountain once Williams had departed on September 21.3

The register says a 20-foot L-4 tower replaced the house in 1933, and firelookout.com dates a 20-foot L-4 tower to 1933.1,2 Rex's page quotes an October 1933 Central Oregonian item saying W.H. Lohuis was building a tower and a house at the butte, among several NRA projects.3 That item describes both, so it does not clearly match the register's account of a replacement.1,3

In 1939 the Forest Service asked for approval to add one building at the lookout that combined a garage, a woodshed and storage space.3 Rex's page does not say whether it was finished.3

The register and firelookout.com both say the tower was gone by the 1940s, but neither says how it came down.1,2 Rex's page ends the entry with a bare "Removed" and no date.3

We found no source that describes what remains on the butte now. The register has a photo captioned as the site in 2008, but its text does not describe what is standing there.1 Access is not stated in the sources we read. Check with the Ochoco National Forest before planning a visit.
