View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.4 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Finley Butte rises about four miles southeast of La Pine in Deschutes County, on the Deschutes National Forest.1,2 A 60-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab went up there in 1932, according to the register and two other lookout histories.1,2,3

Panoramic photographs were taken from the top in 1934 and again in 1938.1,3 In 1936 the Shevlin-Hixson Company had a man stationed on the butte for the last week of May.4,3

The Forest Lookouts page marks the tower as removed, and the register says it is now gone.4,1 With no tower left, the summit view runs in only one direction, north.3

The summit today has a shed and communications equipment, and a rock pit lies below the hill.3 A visitor in 2022 reached the top from La Pine along the Finley Butte Road, turning toward a signed quarry about three miles in and then climbing the hill.3 That visitor also noticed an old gate near the top that seemed damaged and had been open for several years.3
