View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.9 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Frazier Mountain in Union County held a cab rather than a full tower.1,2 The Former Fire Lookout Sites register says the cab was built in 1953 on a spur ridge northeast of the summit, and it lists the Oregon Department of Forestry as administrator.1 The cab was used for emergencies in the 1970s.1

The sources part ways on what happened next. The register says the cab is now gone.1 A Rex's Fire Lookout Page entry says a private party bought it and moved it.3 The Forest Fire Lookout Association says it was sold and taken away, and now serves as a private cabin roughly 20 miles southeast of Joseph.2

The association's Oregon list records the site as a ground site that is gone.4 No source describes what, if anything, remains there, or whether the spot is open to visitors. The site sits at 5,444 feet (1,659 m), about 23 miles north-northeast of Baker City.1,2
