View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Goodwin Peak rises to 1,826 feet in the Siuslaw National Forest, in Lane County.1 It sits about 12 miles east-southeast of Florence.2

In June 1934 The Siuslaw Oar reported that a lookout tower would be built on Goodwin Peak once a road that a CCC side camp on Sweets Creek was extending was far enough along to bring in supplies.3 Sources disagree on what went up. The register says a 30-foot L-4 tower was built in 1934.1 firelookout.com also lists a 30-foot L-4 tower, but dates it to 1942.2 Rex's page gives a different 1934 tower: a 50-foot round timber structure with a 14-by-14 L-4 cab.3

An August 31, 1941 Eugene Guard item says a five-person Forest Service crew did general maintenance on the lookout, including lightning protection work.3 The Aircraft Warning Service activated the station on August 12, 1942, and the Eugene Filter Center is listed with that date.3

In 1954 the tower was replaced with a 41-foot timber L-4 tower.1,2,3 The register says it was used for emergencies in the 1970s and is now gone.1 firelookout.com agrees on the emergency use and says the tower is gone.2

None of the three pages describes what, if anything, is still standing or visible at the summit today, or whether the public can reach it. The register listed the site on December 18, 2010.1
