View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.
Downloads about 3.5 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Grasshopper Mountain sits in the Umpqua National Forest in Douglas County, Oregon, about 33 miles northeast of Tiller.1 A camp was set up there in 1912, and a cupola cabin was built in 1925.2,3
In 1933 the Civilian Conservation Corps built an L-4 cab on a round timber tower about ten feet tall.1,3 A 1933 newspaper item said the new lookout would replace the old one.1 In 1958 the Forest Service replaced that cab with a prefabricated R-6 flat cab.2,1 A helicopter carried segments of the prefabricated house to the top, and 3,800 pounds of building materials were delivered to the summit.1
Victor Boyd left for Tiller in 1917 to be stationed at the lookout, and Euberto Newton of Tiller lived in a tent for about a month in 1958 while the old house was torn down.1 In July 1927 lookout-fireman Walter Lerwell reported the first fire at 4 p.m. and had it under control by nightfall, according to a Roseburg News-Review item quoted on the Forest Lookouts page.1
The lookout came down in 1977.2,1,3 The registry, the Forest Lookouts page and a 2018 hike report all say it was removed, but firelookout.com says it was destroyed that year.2,4,1,3
The most recent account of what remains on the summit that we found is a 2018 hike report. It reports four concrete footings at the top, with a cedar tree grown up beside one of them.3 The Forest Service describes Trail #1580 as passing through meadows to the former lookout, which lies inside the Rogue-Umpqua Divide Wilderness.5 The trail is reached from Grasshopper Trail #1574 via the Acker Divide Trailhead, and wilderness restrictions apply.5 No water is available on the trail, and expect snow cover from mid-fall through mid-spring.5 The trail stops at 800-foot cliffs, where Cliff and Buckeye Lakes come into view.5 We found no later description of what remains on the summit.
