View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Grasshopper Mountain lies in Lane County, about 17 miles northeast of Oakridge.1 A lookout camp was started in 1919, and an L-5 cab was built in 1933.2,1 Forest Lookouts describes the 1933 work as a 10x10 L-5 ground house.3

People staffed the lookout in the late 1930s and early 1940s. In 1938 Gordon Stanley was sent to spend the summer there as a lookout fireman for the Forest Service, and a 1941 entry says the lookout was staffed for 85 days.3

The structure was gone by 1968, according to the Former Fire Lookout Sites Register and Forest Lookouts.2,3 Oregon Hikers tells a different story. It says the last lookout on the summit was erected in 1958 and decommissioned in the 1970s, so the sources disagree about the final years.4

The sources also disagree about the forest. The register places the site in the Willamette National Forest, while Oregon Hikers places it in the Umpqua National Forest.2,4

Today, Oregon Hikers describes four concrete footings at the summit, which sits inside the Rogue-Umpqua Divide Wilderness.4 Its field guide lists a 7.3-mile hike with 2,075 feet of gain to the former lookout site.4 The register and Forest Lookouts pages say nothing about the site today.2,3
