View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.
Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Green Butte stands in the Umpqua National Forest, about 19 miles east-southeast of Canyonville in Douglas County.1,2
In July 1932 the Roseburg News-Review reported plans for nine new lookout houses, one of them on Green Butte between Elk Creek and Cow Creek.3 The Former Fire Lookout Sites register dates the tower to 1933, when it was a 20-foot wooden L-4 design.2,1 The Oregon Lookouts page dates a set of panorama photographs by William Birchall and Lester Moe to August 14, 1933.3
In 1941 the Forest Service stationed Bob Harris at the lookout, and once the fire season ended he and his new wife moved to Pinehurst.3 In July 1945 the News-Review named Sarah Neiderheiser as the lookout for the Green Butte station at Tiller.3
The register says the tower was removed in 1964.2 Firelookout.com says it was destroyed that year, so the sources differ on whether it was taken down or lost.1 The Oregon Lookouts page lists it as removed, without a date.3
No source in this research describes what, if anything, is left at the site today.2,1,3 The register includes a 2007 photograph captioned as the Green Butte Lookout site, but this research did not inspect the image, so it cannot say what the site looks like now.2 None of the three sources gives access or closure information, so anyone planning a visit should check current access with the Umpqua National Forest first.2,1,3
