View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Green Mountain lookout stood in Clatsop County, Oregon, about nine miles west of Vernonia.1 The site's original lookout, dating from the 1920s, was a 60-foot wooden tower with a cabin.2 In September 1934 a Forest Log item, quoted by the Forest Lookouts site, described a new station on the mountain: a 75-foot tower with quarters for the attendant.3 The Former Fire Lookout Sites register instead gives the 1934 tower a height of 83 feet, with a 7-by-7-foot cab and a 14-by-14-foot cabin for living quarters.2

Donald Kyle was named to lead the new station.3 The same site notes a 1956 repainting of the interior and floor.3 In 1957 a new 65-foot wooden tower went up, topped by a 7-by-7 Amort cab, and a new cabin was built for the lookout.3

Once the 1934 tower was up, the former cabin, which had an attached garage, served as storage.2 The lookout was abandoned in 1964.1,2 A March 28, 1986 visit found the tower in pieces on the ground.3 Most of the cab remained on site, though the tower's legs had been taken away.3 Two walls and window frames from the 14-by-14 ground cabin lay there too, and the ruins of another cabin stood nearby.3

Both the firelookout.com page and the register list the lookout as gone.1,2 The newest description we found dates from 1986, so no source says what remains on the site today.3 No source says whether the site is open to the public, so check access before going near it.1,2,3
