View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.5 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Grizzly Peak lookout stood at 5,774 feet (1,760 m) in the Willamette National Forest, in Linn County, about three miles southwest of Mount Jefferson.1,2

In April 1931 the Statesman Journal reported that Grizzly Peak was slated to be one of eleven emergency stations added that year, with its post due to join the telephone system the next year.3

An L-4 lookout house went up on the peak in 1934.1,2,3

The sources agree on the year but not on how the lookout ended. The Former Fire Lookout Sites register and an Oregon lookout-history page say it was removed in 1965.1,3 firelookout.com says the cab was destroyed that same year.2

The site was added to the Former Fire Lookout Sites register on May 7, 2011.1

No source described here says what, if anything, remains at the summit today, or whether visitors can reach it.
