View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.5 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Hanging Rock, in Coos County, Oregon, got a 40-foot lookout tower in 1939.1,2 In August 1939 the lookout was still housed in a tent.3 That month the Myrtle Point Herald reported that a new 40-foot tower and lookout station were to be built, with CCC boys under the ranger's supervision doing the work.3 The Coos Bay Times said in October that the new lookout was nearly finished.3 The tower carried an L-4 cab.1,4 A newspaper report also said the lookout offered excellent coverage of the Rogue River country and the upper reaches of the Coquille's South Fork.3

The lookout was staffed for 94 days in 1941, and its reports went to the Powers Ranger Station over a West Coast Telephone line.3 A 1940 guard placement plan said the site had good views of the Agness and Galice districts, where fires caused by people were most likely to start.3

The register says the lookout was abandoned during the 1950s and no longer stands.1 Rex's Fire Lookout Page and the Forest Fire Lookout Association's Oregon list both call the tower gone.2,5 Weebly's history says the tower was removed, but gives no date.3

No source describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether visitors can reach it.
