View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.
Downloads about 3.7 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Hardscrabble Mountain, also called Hardscrabble Ridge, is in the Ochoco National Forest of Grant County, Oregon.1
A lookout went up there in 1939.2,3 The register and Rex's page describe a 40-foot treated timber L-4 tower.2,3 A 1939 Ochoco history entry, quoted on the Forest Lookouts page, instead names a 50-foot tower and house as that year's major projects, so the sources disagree on height.1 A May 1939 memo also mentions a one-car garage and woodshed for the lookout.1
In October 1950 burglars broke into the station and took two lanterns. Rangers were also asked to look in on other lookouts in case of similar break-ins.1
The register says the tower was removed in 1968.2 Rex's page says it was destroyed that year.3 The Oregon index lists the site as a gone tower.4
No source we read describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether visitors can reach it.
