Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Harl Butte is a Wallowa-Whitman National Forest lookout that sits above the lower end of the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area.1 The register says the U.S. Forest Service administers it.1 The butte is named for the homesteader John Harl.2

A Forest Service lookout station was set up here by 1925.3 A newspaper item from that year, quoted on the Oregon Lookouts page, says a house was being built on the prominence.3 The register, firelookout.com and cherylhill.net date the earlier L-4 cabin to 1934.1,2,4 The sources do not reconcile the 1925 item with the 1934 date.

The current cab went up in 1954 to replace the 1934 cabin.1,2,4 The register describes it as an L-4 ground house with an outrigger hip roof, and cherylhill.net notes that it has no catwalk around it.1,4

A 1944 newspaper item, quoted on the Oregon Lookouts page, says a lookout had gone to Harl Butte for the rest of that season.3 A 1952 item says a dry season kept a lookout on longer than usual. It is the only fire-season detail I found for this site.3

A visit on June 22, 2023 found the cab staffed, and the staffer said it was his 23rd season in the region.4 The register says the site is in active service.1

The route runs from Road 39 onto Road 3930 for 15.2 miles, then forks left onto Road 280 and follows it for 2.5 miles to the road's end.4 A wire gate below the lookout is there to keep cattle out.4 The sources do not say whether vehicles can go past that gate, so check road conditions and access with the Forest Service before you go.
