View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

He He Mountain sits in the Willamette National Forest, in Lane County, about 18 miles north-northeast of Oakridge.1 The first lookout was a 10-foot pole tower with a shake cabin, dated to 1919 by the registry and by firelookout.com.2,1 In August 1932 the Eugene Guard, as quoted on a lookout history page, reported that new lookout houses would be built at He-He Mountain and at several other sites.3

In 1934 the pole tower was replaced with a 22-foot round timber tower with an L-4 cab.2,3 In 1958 a treated timber tower with an R-6 flat-roof cab took its place.2,1,3

The registry and the Rex's page record its removal in 1968.2,3 firelookout.com says it was destroyed that year instead, so the sources disagree on how it ended.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Oregon list also marks the site as gone.4 The site was added to the Former Fire Lookout Sites Register on May 7, 2011.2

No source we read describes what, if anything, remains of the site now, or whether the public can reach it.
