View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Holland Point, in the Umpqua National Forest about 8 miles southwest of Oakridge in Lane County, got its lookout in 1933.1,2 A September 1933 Roseburg Chieftain item, quoted on Rex's page, said the CCC would build a 14-by-14 lookout before the snow flew.3 The same page describes the finished tower as a round fir pole structure with an L-4 model 1931 cab. Building it took 125 man-days, and getting the materials in required a 12-mile pack haul.3

The sources disagree on the height. The register and firelookout.com both give 30 feet,1,2 a July 1938 inspection letter says 40 feet,3 and Rex's 1933 description says 43 feet.3

That July, District Ranger Brown visited the tower and house and wrote that the sway made the fire finder impossible to keep level.3 The letter said the lookout could do very little of the needed repair work alone.3 Ring-connected pole braces were added in 1940.3

The register and firelookout.com both describe the tower as gone.1,2

The register has a 2007 photo captioned as the site, but no source we read describes what is there now.1
