View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.8 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Huckleberry (Shasta) Mountain sits in Jackson County, Oregon, about nine miles southwest of Crater Lake, in the Rogue River National Forest.1,2

Ranger Elgan selected the site in 1928.3 A crow's nest and a camp went up there in 1929.1 In 1934 a 50-foot pole L-6 tower and a cabin replaced the crow's nest.1,2 Forest Lookouts describes that tower as round timber with a small cab and no catwalk.3

A 1936 Medford Mail Tribune item says Jack Crump was in charge of the lookout and guard station.3 In July 1941 Clyde Onn moved to Huckleberry Mountain from Hershberger Mountain, where he had spent nine years as lookout.3 In 1950 the George Brown family planned a summer stay at the Forest Service lookout.3

The register records the lookout's removal at about 1960.1 Firelookout.com and Forest Lookouts say it was destroyed around that year.2,3 The dates agree, but the wording does not.

Firelookout.com says the 1929 crow's nest was still there, even though the same page says the tower was destroyed in 1960.2 We could not confirm that claim from another source. No source we read describes what stands at the site today or whether visitors can reach it, so do not count on seeing anything there.
