View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.4 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Huckleberry Mountain is in Douglas County, about 20 miles southeast of Cottage Grove, at 4,754 feet.1,2 The register lists the Douglas FPA as the agency that administered the site.1

A 60-foot pole tower with an 8-by-8-foot cab, plus a ground cabin for living quarters, went up in 1929.1,2 In 1945 a 42-foot pole L-4 tower replaced it.1,2

Both sources say the 1945 tower was removed in 1970.1,2 firelookout.com's page header reads "R.I.P. 1929-1945," which would end the lookout in 1945 instead. Its own description gives the 1970 removal, so we follow the description.2

We found no source that describes what, if anything, remains on the summit today, or whether the site can be visited. Check with the managing agency before planning a trip.
