View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.0 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Indian Ridge lies about 20 miles southwest of Mount Hood, in Clackamas County, Oregon, and the U.S. Forest Service administered the lookout site.1,2

The first structure was an open-sided shelter with a windowless cupola on the roof, which the register dates to 1923.1,2 In 1932 a ground cabin went up. The register calls it an L-5 cabin,1 while the Forest Fire Lookout Association calls it an L-4 cabin built that year.2

Forest Lookouts records a painting job at the lookout in 1956. In 1958 linoleum went down on the floor, and aerial markings were painted on the lookout.3

The lookout was deactivated in 1964.3 The sources disagree about its end. The Forest Fire Lookout Association says the cabin was destroyed in 1969,2 and the register says it was removed by 1970.1 Forest Lookouts lists the site simply as removed.3

No source we read describes what remains at the site today.
