View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.8 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Johnson Butte lies in Curry County, on the Siskiyou National Forest, at 3,779 feet.1 In 1933 a 20-foot observation tower and a rag camp were set up on the site.1,2 Panorama photos were taken on November 7, 1936.3

A May 1940 Siskiyou National Forest guard-placement plan, quoted on the Oregon page, suggested a season on the premise that lightning was the post's main justification.3 In 1941 the lookout was staffed for 84 days and reported to the Gold Beach station by radio.3

In 1947 a 20-foot treated timber L-4 tower replaced the first structure.1,2 The register says that tower was removed in 1968, and firelookout.com says it was destroyed that year.1,2 The Oregon page also lists the tower as removed.3 The firelookout.org county list marks the site as gone.4 I found no source that describes what remains at the site today, or whether the public can reach it.
