View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.0 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Little Bunchgrass Mountain held a lookout in Lane County, about 10 miles east of Oakridge, in the Willamette National Forest.1,2 The U.S. Forest Service administered it.1 The Former Fire Lookout Sites register listed the site on May 8, 2011.1

The register and firelookout.com both date the cab to 1933. It was a 10-by-10-foot L-5 ground cab.1,2 A local history of the forest's lookouts dates the build later. It reports that materials for the lookout house were on their way in April 1934, and that a 10-by-10-foot L-5 lookout house was built in 1934.3

A July 1933 Eugene newspaper item said Frank Singletary had left to serve as lookout fireman on the mountain.3 An August 1938 item said Phillip Dimick was then serving as lookout fireman there.3

The register and the local history say the lookout was removed in 1968.1,3 Firelookout.com says it was destroyed that year.2 None of these sources says how the cab came down.1,2,3

No source here describes what, if anything, remains on the mountain today, or whether the site is open to visitors.1,2,3
