View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.
Downloads about 4.3 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Lookout Mountain stood in Douglas County on the Umpqua National Forest, about 30 miles east of Roseburg.1
In 1924 a D-6 cupola cabin, built on the ground, was put up here.2,1 A 30-foot timber tower with an L-4 cab followed in 1949.2,1,3
A News-Review item dated November 26, 1936 reported that Harry Willis, a veteran lookout in the North Umpqua district, had been sent back to his station for additional duty.3
The register and firelookout.com agree on the 1966 abandonment and the 1983 end, though one says removed and the other says destroyed.2,1 firelookout.com also dates the destruction of the cupola cabin to 1955.1
A letter tied to a July 5, 1972 inspection says the lookout had been used as an emergency lookout for about four days a season.3 It estimated $1,000 to $1,500 in repairs and recommended abandoning the structure and disposing of it.3 That letter sits poorly with the 1966 abandonment date, since it describes recent use.2,3
The register lists the site as removed.2 We found no source that describes what, if anything, remains on the summit today, or whether the public can visit.
