View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.
Downloads about 3.5 MB of terrain data the first time.
Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Mace Mountain, in Douglas County about 26 miles northeast of Roseburg, got a fire lookout in 1934.1,2 A 1933 newspaper item, quoted on Rex's Fire Lookout Page, proposed a 10-by-10 lookout that the CCC would build before winter weather set in; that is the usual size for a secondary station.3 The register puts the cab on a minor point one and a quarter miles east of Old Fairview Mountain and calls it an L-5 cab.1,2 Panorama photographs were taken on March 20, 1934.3
The register's photo caption reads 1933 to 1965, which does not fit the register's own date of removal around 1960.1 Firelookout.com says the cab was destroyed in 1960, and Rex's page lists a 1960 removal.2,3
