View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The register lists this as the Marion Peak Lookout Site. It says an L-4 cab was built in 1934, about a mile southwest of Marion Lake, on a spur below the summit.1 Rex Kamstra's page places the lookout in the Willamette National Forest and gives the same year and design.2 Ron Kemnow's notes also give 1934.3

The cab came down in the mid-1960s, and the sources do not agree on the year.1,2,3 The register says it was gone by 1965, and Kamstra's page says 1965 too.1,2 Kemnow dates its removal to about 1964.3

A hiking guide gives the name Marion Mountain to a former lookout viewpoint over the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness, reached by a moderate hike of 9 miles and 1,100 feet of climbing from the Pine Ridge Trailhead.4 The guide also warns that Marion Mountain is "not to be confused with Marion Peak just to the south."4 We could not confirm from these sources that the register's site and the guide's viewpoint are the same spot.

We found no source that describes what, if anything, remains of the cab on the ground today.
