View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.8 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Mill Creek Ridge, in Wasco County, had a lookout built in the 1930s.1,2,3 The register describes a 20-foot pole L-4 tower with a cabin.1 Rex's notes record panorama photographs taken on July 10, 1937.3

Rex's notes quote a 1949 forest supervisor's report saying the state took over ownership of this station and Postage Stamp in March 1950, as part of its protection duties.3 The cabin received interior and exterior paint in 1954.3

The register says the lookout was removed in 1956, and firelookout.com says it was destroyed that year.1,2 Rex's notes quote a Barlow District report for 1956, logged in February 1957, saying it was taken down and burned the previous fall.3

Oregon Hikers places the old lookout about two miles east of the ridge's westernmost prominence, which its waypoint marks.4 I found no source that describes what remains at the site, or whether the spot is open to visitors.
