View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.8 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Mount Hebo sits in the Siuslaw National Forest in Yamhill County, about 20 miles south-southeast of Tillamook.1,2 A lookout man was stationed there by 1913.3 That July a Eugene paper reported a newly finished phone line to the peak and a permanently assigned observer posted there.3 The register lists three observation spots on the summit that year, with tents as living quarters.1 In 1922 a forest inspector went up to instruct the Hebo lookout in fire finding.3

In June 1923 work was under way on a lookout house atop the mountain.3 The register says a cupola cabin went up on the northeast summit in 1924, with a 30-foot platform on the southwest summit.1 The Forest Lookouts history calls that southwest structure a tower.3

A December 1936 item in a Forest newsletter, as quoted by the Forest Lookouts history, reported that a new tower and house had just been finished on the mountain.3 The register and the Forest Lookouts history both date a 53-foot tower on the east summit to 1937.1,3 In 1950 a 67-foot tower of treated timber, topped by an L-4 cab, went up on the northwest summit.1,3 The last tower was removed in 1978.1,2,3

A 2013 Pew Trusts fact sheet calls the lookout a popular day hike and says hikers still use the Pioneer-Indian Trail.4 The other sources date the last tower's removal to 1978,1,2,3 so it is unclear what the fact sheet means by the lookout. We found no source that describes what, if anything, remains of the lookout site today.
