View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The summit lookout on Mount Hood began in the summer of 1915, when the Forest Service set up a station on the peak.1 The plan, reported that July, was to keep a lookout on the peak to watch the Bull Run forest reserve through the whole year.2 The register says the first setup, in 1915, was a fire finder on the summit cairn and a wood-floored tent. Later that year a D-6 cupola cabin prototype, which the register links to Lige Coleman, replaced them.3

Elijah "Lige" Coalman, also spelled Coleman in some sources, was named to run the station.2 In August 1918 the Oregonian reported that Coalman had resigned recently.2 By late September 1918, Mark Weygandt was the observer.2

Both the register and firelookout.com date the cabin's abandonment to 1935 and its slide off the summit to 1941.3,4 We did not find a source that describes the summit today or what, if anything, remains of the cabin.
