View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.7 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Peavine Mountain lookout site sits at 4,732 feet in the Mount Hood National Forest, in Clackamas County, Oregon.1 It began in 1927 as a camp roughly half a mile north of the top.1,2

In 1933 a 26-foot pole L-4 tower replaced the camp.1,2 A Weebly summary dates the tower to the same year.3 The register credits a panorama of the lookout, dated October 10, 1933, to the National Archives Pacific Northwest Region.1,3 In 1935 the summit gained a tent cabin.1,2

The register says the lookout no longer stood by 1957. Firelookout.com gives the same year and lists the site as gone.1,2 The site was added to the register on September 20, 2010.1

No source read describes what, if anything, remains on the summit today. The register page carries a 2011 photograph of the site, captioned with the year and the photographer's name.1
