View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Pogue Point lies about 12 miles north-northwest of Unity, in the Malheur and Wallowa-Whitman national forests.1,2
The Former Fire Lookout Sites register and firelookout.com describe the first lookout as a 43-foot pole platform set up in the 1920s. They say it was replaced in 1934 by a 22-foot wooden L-4 tower.2,1 Forest Lookouts describes the platform as 45 feet tall, and its 1937 notes describe a lookout station still to be built at the point, which is hard to square with a 1934 tower.3
In July 1948 the Forest Service awarded a contract to Dick Hindman of Baker to build a new tower and house there.3 In 1949 a 41-foot CT-2 tower with a 14-by-14-foot lookout house replaced the old platform, which was torn down.3 The register calls the 1949 structure a 41-foot treated timber L-4 tower instead.2
In 1952 Mr. and Mrs. Zelador came from Texas for the summer, and Mr. Zelador, who worked on a Forest Service crew, was to be stationed at the lookout.3 In September 1962 Bob Fiore left Pogue Point and was replaced by Mr. and Mrs. John Hauk, although the same notice said the Unity-area lookouts were no longer manned by summer personnel.3 In October 1963 Roy Howard was stationed there during the fire danger season.3
The register says the tower was used for emergencies in the 1960s and is now gone.2 firelookout.com's summary reads "Emergency 1960s. Gone."1 Forest Lookouts says the tower was demolished during the winter of 1986.3
