Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Rancheria Rock sits in Wheeler County, about seven miles south-southeast of Fossil, Oregon.1 Sources spell the name two ways, Rancheria and Rancherie.1,2

A lookout was staffed on the rock by the 1930s. A 1936 newspaper said the state had maintained it through fire season for the previous eight years.2

The sources disagree about the cab. Firelookout.com dates the first development to the 1930s and says the L-4 cab was changed later.1 The National Historic Lookout Register describes the cab as a 14-by-14-foot Oregon Department of Forestry design, put up in the 1950s in place of an earlier 1930s building.3 A 1946 district report already lists a 14 x 14 standard ground-type lookout here, which does not fit a 1950s build date.2

District reports list three fires from this station in 1963 and five in 1964.2 A 1963 report said the lookout should be replaced and that it was getting dangerous to use.2 The same report says the building had been patched and parts replaced, and in 1966 crews added a new foundation, catwalk, railings and shutters.2

Firelookout.com says the site was abandoned for many years and has seen some preservation work.1 The register says the lookout is no longer in active service, calls it one of the most endangered sites in Oregon, and recorded it on March 1, 2003.3

Today the sources disagree about who controls the land. The register places the lookout on BLM land, while firelookout.com says it sits on private property with no public access.3,1 Neighbors and the community have expressed interest in restoring it alongside a nearby state park, and the Oregon chapter of the Forest Fire Lookout Association is handling the communications.3 Until the land question is settled, treat the site as off limits.

Where sources disagree

We show disagreements between sources instead of quietly picking one. If you know which is right, please tell us.

  • Sources disagree on the year it was built.

    • NHLR: 1950
    • firelookout.com -- Rex Kamstra's Forest Fire Lookout Page: 1930
    • Every Lookout in Oregon (Cheryl Hill): 1930

Sources give different build years. Often one counts the first lookout on the site and another the structure there now.
