View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.5 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Red Butte lookout site sits in the Willamette National Forest, about 12 miles south of Mount Jefferson.1 The former lookout register gives its elevation as 5,843 feet, while a 1930 newspaper item quoted on the Oregon Lookouts page put the summit at 6,000 feet.2,3

A shake cabin went up on the site in the 1920s.2,1 The register and firelookout.com both say it was replaced by an L-4 cab in 1931.2,1 The Oregon Lookouts page describes the 1931 building differently, as a gable-roofed lookout house measuring 14 x 14 and dated to about 1931.3

An October 1930 Daily Capital Journal item, quoted on the Oregon Lookouts page, names Anthony Nuttman as a Forest Service lookout and smoke chaser who spent his summers on Red Butte's summit.3

The register says the lookout was abandoned at some later point and has since disappeared.2 Firelookout.com also lists it as abandoned,1 and the Oregon Lookouts page marks it as removed.3

We found no source that describes what, if anything, remains at the site now, or whether the public can reach it. Ask the Willamette National Forest before going out to look for it.
