View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.8 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Saddle Guard Station is a former fire lookout in the Siuslaw National Forest, in Lane County, Oregon, about 16 miles north-northeast of Florence.1,2 The register gives its elevation as 2,297 feet (700 metres), and firelookout.com gives the same figure.1,2

The register dates a pole L-4 tower on the site to 1937 and says it no longer stands.1 Firelookout.com gives the same year and the same design, and lists the tower as gone.2

The register's photo is captioned as a Saddle Guard Station lookout panorama dated 4-18-34, three years before that build date.1 The sources do not explain the difference.

The register names the U.S. Forest Service as the administering agency, and dates the entry to November 15, 2010.1

No source I read describes what, if anything, remains of the site today.1,2
