Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

South Baldy is a fire lookout in Wheeler County, Oregon, administered by the Oregon Department of Forestry.1 Fire detection at the site goes back to at least 1936. That August a radio set was installed on Baldy Mountain near Waterman, where Earl Huff, the forest guard, could broadcast fire details to any part of four national forests within a few minutes.1,2

By 1956 the lookout house had been pulled apart by wind, and the district's annual report said a new lookout was needed.2 The current tower was constructed in 1958 and 1959.1 A 1958 report describes a 40-foot tower with a 14-by-14 cab that was about 40 percent done that season, with about half the job finished by November 1.2 The 1959 report says work resumed in April, and the structure was in use by the fire season.2 Sources disagree on the height. Firelookout.com lists a 50-foot wooden tower in 1936 and a 54-foot wooden ODF tower in 1959.3

The register says the site was staffed to at least 1964.1 The Oregon Lookouts page's 1964 entry counts eleven first discoveries and calls the season busy.2

The register listed the lookout in July 2022 as US 1640, OR 158, and a lookout list shows it as standing.1,4 Firelookout.com says it is still there and adds, "No public access."3 The register names the Oregon Department of Forestry as administrator, but the sources do not say whether the public may reach the tower.1 Among the sources read, only firelookout.com states that there is no public access.3 Check with the Oregon Department of Forestry before planning a visit, and do not try to climb the tower.

Where sources disagree

We show disagreements between sources instead of quietly picking one. If you know which is right, please tell us.

  • Sources disagree on the year it was built.

    • NHLR: 1958
    • firelookout.com -- Rex Kamstra's Forest Fire Lookout Page: 1936
    • Every Lookout in Oregon (Cheryl Hill): 1959

Sources give different build years. Often one counts the first lookout on the site and another the structure there now.
