View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.
Downloads about 3.8 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The lookout on South Saddle Mountain stood near the line between Washington and Tillamook counties, in Oregon.1,2 The FFLOS register says a 90-foot crow's nest with an enclosed platform and a shake cabin went up in 1932.1 A 1932 district report also records a log lookout house built on Saddle Mountain that year.2
A July 1930 daily report from the lookout says a cougar killed a dog 40 feet from the lookout tower.2 An August 1931 item recalls that the year before, while Tom Stevenson was up in his lookout 90 feet above the ground, a cougar came to the foot of the tree and killed his dog.2 Both items place a lookout on the mountain before the 1932 date, so the 1932 date may not be the first lookout on the site.2
In August 1933 the Wilson River fire swept up the mountain and drove Stevenson from his post.2 An August 25 item said it was still unknown whether the lookout or the cabin had burned.2 A report dated August 26 says Stevenson reported the lookout destroyed by fire.2
The FFLOS register says a 40-foot pole L-4 tower replaced the crow's nest in 1947 and was removed in 1974.1 The weebly history dates the replacement differently, to a tower in 1946 and a 40-foot timber tower completed in 1948, and it also lists a smaller 18-foot tower built in 1944.2 Firelookout.com gives the 1947 replacement and the 1974 removal.3
A 1941 survey recovery note, quoted on the same weebly page, describes a tree topped with a platform about 90 feet up and an old brick chimney about 35 feet from the tree's base.2 That is a description from 1941. I found no source that describes what remains at the site since the 1974 removal, or whether it is open to visitors.
