View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.9 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Spanish Peak rises to about 6,871 feet in the Ochoco National Forest, in Wheeler County.1,2,3 The summit was once called Bald Mountain.4 A camp went up on top in 1921, and a 14-by-14-foot cab followed in 1923.2,5

A May 1923 newspaper item said the planned house would be the first standard lookout house on the Ochoco forest.4 The lookout register gives 1930 for the cab instead, so the dates disagree.1 In December 1931 the lookout house was raised onto 20-foot stilts late in the fire season, for better visibility.4

The old house gave way to a timber tower in 1938.2,5 The sources disagree about its size. A 1938 newspaper item described a 40-foot tower, while the register and firelookout.com give 50 feet.4,1,2 The register also dates the swap to 1939.1

Martin Statey moved into the new house in 1924, and Floyd Jones was reporting fires from it by 1927.4 In August 1930, lookout Marvin Angle reported a timber fire about two miles southwest of Derr station.4 An August 1934 newspaper item said a forest radio station on the peak kept daily contact with Tamarack Mountain, on the Umatilla forest, and Fields Peak, on the Malheur.4 The last staffing we found is from 1952, when sisters Eudora and Leora Houston were posted there.2,4

The register says the tower was removed in 1968.1 Firelookout.com says it was destroyed that year.2 Oregon Hikers links its removal to a drop in the use of lookouts.5

We found no source that describes a standing structure today. Oregon Hikers reports that concrete footings can still be seen on the summit, and that a rough, unmaintained road runs to the top.5 Outdoor Pilgrim says a visitor with a moderately high clearance vehicle can drive to the summit on National Forest roads.3 The Forest Service may close some land access from December 1 to May 1 because of bald eagles.3
