View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.9 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Stodt (Stott) Mountain rises to 3,128 feet in Lincoln County, Oregon.1 Construction was under way in 1953, when a Lincoln FPA annual report put the 30-foot split-cedar tower about 15 percent complete.2 The register and firelookout.com date the tower to 1954 and describe it as 32 feet tall, so the sources disagree on its height.1,3 The 1954 report lists a 14-by-14 cab, a railing and a lightning arrestor, at a cost of $1,922.98.2 The register adds that the cables, bolts, stairs and cab came from other Lincoln FPA towers.1

In 1959 galvanized steel sheet was added below the windows against moisture, and the cab's exterior was painted.2

Staffing is recorded for the late 1960s.2 The Forest Log reported in 1967 that Marcella Coy had moved onto Stodt Mountain for her 19th season as a lookout.2 By 1969 the district had decided this would be the only lookout manned on a regular basis, and in 1970 it was the only one kept manned through the season.2

The lookout was abandoned in 1972.1,3,2 The register lists the site among former lookouts and gives no removal date.1 No source I found describes what, if anything, remains at the summit today, or how to reach it.1
