View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Stony Point lookout stood about 21 miles west-southwest of Eugene, in Lane County, Oregon.1 The Western Lane Fire Patrol administered it.2 In an August 1934 letter to the Regional Forester, quoted by Forest Lookouts, the forest supervisor reported that the secretary of the Western Lane Fire Patrol Association was anxious to get something done. The letter said the lookout house had already been bought and was in storage, and that a trail might be practical for packing it in.3

The sources disagree on when the tower went up.2,1,3 The Register and firelookout.com both date it to 1938 and describe a wooden L-6 tower with a cabin.2,1 The Forest Lookouts page instead quotes 1936 construction records. They show work began on September 15, 1936, on a tower with a 7-by-7 cab.3 Those records give the height as 100 feet.3 A November 1936 Forest Log entry says a foreman and a crew of five finished a 103-foot tower within about a month, and the Register says 110.2,3

In August 1937 Kenneth Fildes was on detached duty from the camp to staff the lookout.3 The Forest Log said he had picked up a number of fires and was very accurate in locating them.3

A cabin went up in 1942 at a cost of $140. In 1953 a quarter mile of road was built to the lookout, and the dwelling house was refinished inside and re-roofed.3

The Columbus Day hurricane destroyed the tower and its cabin on October 12, 1962.2,3

The Register and firelookout.com both describe the tower as destroyed.2,1 We found no source that describes what, if anything, is left on the peak today, or whether the land is open to visitors.
