Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Sugarloaf Mountain's first lookout was a 15-foot L-4 cab, dated to 1932 by the register and by firelookout.1,2 The Oregon Lookouts history instead dates the first tower to 1933.3 A garage measuring 16 by 18 went up at the site in 1934.3

The present cab went up in 1949.1,2 It is an L-4 on a 32-foot treated timber tower, and the register says it has a catwalk.1,2,3 A 1948 note in the Malheur Historical Record says the old house was replaced even though it was still fairly good.3

A 2018 visit found the lookout staffed, and the 2026 directory still lists it as staffed.4,5 The register says the site is in active service.1 Firelookout says the lookout is available for emergencies.2

The directory lists the site as legally accessible to the public.5 The 2018 visit noted a gate on the access road about 0.6 miles below the lookout, so check road conditions before heading up.4 Because the lookout is a working station, treat the cab as off limits to climbing.

Where sources disagree

We show disagreements between sources instead of quietly picking one. If you know which is right, please tell us.

  • Sources disagree on the year it was built.

    • NHLR: 1949
    • firelookout.com -- Rex Kamstra's Forest Fire Lookout Page: 1932
    • Every Lookout in Oregon (Cheryl Hill): 1949

Sources give different build years. Often one counts the first lookout on the site and another the structure there now.
