View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.4 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Table Lookout stood on Table Mountain in Lane County, Oregon, at 4,178 feet.1,2 The register says an earlier 30-foot 7-by-7 tower with a ground cabin dated from 1933. A local history instead dates a round, 30-foot timber tower, raised by the Wendling CCC camp, to 1934.2,3

In 1947 a 14-by-14-foot lookout house was set on a timber tower. The register calls that tower 20 feet tall, and the local history says 25.2,3

The staffing record I found dates from 1952. The Forest Log reported that William Hastings, 74, had died of a heart attack on July 17 while stationed at the lookout. He worked for the Eastern Lane County Forest Protective association, and his wife shared the post with him.3

Sources disagree on when the tower came down. The register says it was removed in 1979, and the local history says it was dismantled and salvaged that year.2,3 Firelookout.com says it was destroyed in 1978.1

The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the tower as gone.4 No source I read describes what remains at the summit now, or whether visitors can reach it.
