Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Tope Creek Lookout sits about 15 miles north of Enterprise in Wallowa County, Oregon.1,2 The National Historic Lookout Register credits the U.S. Forest Service with building it in 1936, and says the tower was later passed to the Oregon Department of Forestry.1 The state's historic site record gives the same c.1936 date but names the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) as builder, so the sources do not agree on who put it up.1,3,4

The tower is a timber structure about 103 feet tall.1,4 The sources also disagree about the cab. The Register gives an 8-by-8-foot L-6 cab, while firelookout.com gives 7 by 7 feet.1,2

The Register dates the end of staffing to the early 1970s and says the tower was then declared surplus.1 A staff list on firelookout.com covers 1954 through 1970, but it presents only the personnel the site knows of, so it may not be a full roster.2 The same site places a ground house with living quarters in the 1936 build, but a 2022 post on cherylhill.net quotes the owner dating the living quarters to the 1960s.2,3

Sale details also differ. According to firelookout.com, a state auction in 1978 sold off the land and tower.2 The 2022 post gives 1984 for an Oregon Department of Forestry auction, and says Brian Wizard bought the property in 1991 and found the living quarters and cabin heavily vandalized.3

The Register lists Wizard as owner, says he restored the tower, and records its registration on May 19, 1997.1 The state record calls the site significantly altered and gives an approximate second date of around 1992 without saying what that date marks.4 Both the Register and firelookout.com describe the property as private, and the sources do not mention public access or any rental.1,2 A 2022 account describes a tour of the site during a Forest Fire Lookout Association conference.3 Because the tower is private property, anyone who wants to see it should ask the owner first and should not climb it without permission.
